Gen Y: What Sort Of Company Do You Want To Work For?

Studies have shown that Gen Y’s attitude to business is a lot different compared to it’s predecessor, Gen X. In contrast to the Baby Boomers and Gen X, today’s youth aren’t guaranteed be more successful than their parents.

The perception of success has shifted. Gen Y does not gauge its success or happiness on material possessions as much as previous generations. Young people and students are looking for more than just monetary compensation in their work.

Studies show that the people of Gen Y are after a good work/life balance, interesting work, the potential to contribute to society, and the opportunity to work for an organization that shares their ideals and values. In fact, a lot of young people and students would prefer to take a pay cut and work for an organization that shares their values rather than slog for hours a day working towards something they feel has no reward.

So, while you’re looking for your perfect job, it’s important for you to be aware of exactly what you are seeking, what kind of environment and company you want to work for, and whether it ticks all your boxes:

You want to work for an ethical company with a strong CSR (corporate social responsibility) processes

Many Gen Y’s are very aware of the kind of company they work for. They look for an organization that’s environmentally aware and makes ethical choices (i.e. fair trade, actively recycling, and being charitable). To find this out about an organization, you can look and see if they have any certifications or acknowledgements on their website. For instance an ISO 26000 or ISO 14001 certification demonstrates that they have taken steps to improve CSR and reduce their impact on the environment.

Check to see if they’ve helped out any charities or if they offer any discounts for charitable causes. Remember, you can also ask a bit more about their CSR (corporate social responsibility) in the interview – if they’re as interested about it as you are, it will certainly earn you some points!

You would like to work for a company that gives you the opportunity to progress and move up

The best way to ensure you will have the chance to grow within a business is to apply for either a newish start-up company or a business you know is rapidly expanding. These sorts of companies can require a lot of work (and sometimes overtime), but if you play your cards right, you will be able to get your foot in the door, impress the right people, and work your way up the corporate ladder.

You want a job that interests you

Much of the world’s population is currently in this position, however, Gen Y has a significant advantage since it’s young, tech savvy, and can easily pick up new skills. The best way to find a job that interests you is not to settle and only apply for jobs you think you will enjoy. After a while, if you aren’t happy in your position, then think about what it is you don’t like about it and make sure that thing isn’t a part of your new position.

However, you don’t want to hop from one company to the next too often, as this will demonstrate that you are not committed. During your interview, try and ask the kinds of questions that will clear up any doubts for you.

If you can’t find work, never forget about volunteering and apprenticeships.

So, remember, if you are looking to work in a company where you feel valued and can make a difference, it’s essential that you consider exactly what you’re after when you apply for work. Know what you want, do your research, and ask questions if you’re not sure.
