Just like all relationships, the one you have with your job is susceptible to ruts. It is easy to lose inspiration and get caught up in the monotonous routine of the 9-5. Follow these simple tips to shake things up and rekindle the love for your work.
1. Unplug

Think about the root cause of your unhappiness. Could you be experiencing burnout? A negative attitude about work could be caused by overall poor health.
Make sure you are eating right, getting enough sleep, and moving your body. Try yoga or meditation. Take that long walk. Self-care is important to maintaining a happy outlook on life.
Before making any rash decisions, take the time to put some space between you and your job. While a two-week trip across the globe may not be in the cards, a long weekend couldn't hurt.
Go somewhere and unplug. Take the time to gain perspective. Perhaps putting some distance between you and work will make the heart grow fonder!
2. Find Your Purpose

Why do you get out of bed every day and head to work? That "why" is more important than you may think.
Connecting purpose in your career has far-ranging benefits to your overall health, happiness, motivation, and job satisfaction. By finding meaning and purpose in your work, it will fuel passion for your goals and bring about fulfillment in your employment experience.
Some questions you should be asking yourself to discover your purpose include:
- What ignites you? What are the parts of your job that really make you come alive, lose track of time, and feel almost effortless?
- What is the part of your job that helps others?
- What are your strengths? What are things that you have always been good at? Are those translatable skills in the workplace?
- If you were given the chance to teach others, what would you teach?
- What part of your job would you be willing to do for free?
When analyzing these answers, you are looking for that sweet spot where your passions and strengths intersect. These questions should help illuminate that intersection.
Once you find a pattern of strengths and passion, craft a professional mission statement. Use that statement as a daily focus in your work.
3. Educate Yourself

There is a deep connection between what you are good at and what makes you happy. Take the time to think about where you really shine. Is it writing? Is it developing relationships? Is it coding? Whatever it is, take the time to invest in your skills.
Take a class, go to a workshop, and hone in on your top abilities. Odds are, you enjoy these tasks and will enjoy diving deep and learning more about them.
Take your top skills and analyze your current position. Are there ways in which you could shift and bring more focus on these skills in your day-to-day? Are there opportunities for you to work more in the areas that interest you and take advantage of your skillset?
Meet with your supervisor and talk about the parts of your job that involve your top skills and make the case to do more of that work.
4. Pay It Forward

Consider mentoring a co-worker. Mentoring can help remind you of your accomplishments and talents while also provide the fulfillment of helping someone else succeed. Skills grow and deepen when teaching others and it is a perfect way to find new energy in everyday tasks.
Participating in and developing a mentorship program will also put you on the radar for leadership potential.
5. Set Goals

Goals provide the map to get you to where you want to be. Setting goals will provide the framework for measurable progress and will help you to re-engage in your career. By setting and accomplishing goals, it will provide a deeper sense of worth in your profession.
Once you have taken the time to craft your professional mission statement, strengthen your top talents, unplug, and teach others, it is then time to take all of that self discovery and create a master plan.
Construct three career goals and set a realistic timeline. Be sure to sit down with your boss and discuss your goals and how they shape your five-year plan.
