Popular job review website Glassdoor.com recently released its "Best Places To Work 2020" lists.
These lists are always fun to read, but they are subjective like any lists of this nature. However, there's still a lot that can be learned from them, including the things these high-ranking companies have in common that help make them successful.
According to Glassdoor's list of 100 large-sized companies, the top five companies to work for are:
- Hubspot
- Bain & Company
- DocuSign
- In-N-Out Burger
- Sammons Financial Group
And of the 50 best small to medium companies, the top five to work for are:
- Life.Church
- CrossCountry Consulting
- 15Five
- IGNW
- BambooHR
All of these companies are unique in their own right, but here are some common things that they have in common:
They Have Great Company Cultures

Company culture is a big deal! For some job seekers, company culture is the deciding factor on whether they accept a job offer or not.
Many employers now realize that a strong company culture is one of the most important benefits that they can offer. A strong culture leads to happy employees. Happy employees are often successful employees, and successful employees usually translates into a successful business. Everyone wins!
In the case of HubSpot, many employees cited a flexible work environment and respect for work-life balance as one of the company's strongest cultural assets. Employees feel that if a personal or family issue comes up, the company is supportive of their needs.
At Sammons Financial Group, employees describe a close-knit workforce and were complimentary about the company's half-day Fridays and community service efforts.
A majority of the employers on the list were also given high marks for their focus on inclusion and diversity, and scored highly for good benefits and pay, as well.
They Encourage Professional Growth

When it comes to growing your career, you are your own best advocate.
It's important that you take responsibility over your own professional growth. Companies are not required to help you grow your career. However, if a company does take interest in your professional growth, you should take advantage of it.
Most of the companies on Glassdoor's list offer a number of advancement opportunities and the reviews indicate they take an interest in their employee's professional growth.
In-N-Out Burger is the only food chain to consistently make the best places to work list and one reason is because the company has built a strong reputation for growing their talent from within. It's not uncommon for someone who started working there in high school to eventually end up in a leadership role.
"[In-N-Out Burger] puts forth a significant effort to advance your skills as an employee and help you climb the ladder," one employee wrote on Glassdoor.
At the end of the day, it's still up to the employee to take the lead on their professional growth, but if you're making the effort, these companies will notice and invest in you.
They Have Great Employer Branding
Take a deep dive into the best places to work lists and you'll see that most of the companies included have been on these lists for multiple years. Also, many of these companies have made it on other lists or received additional recognition. This isn't an accident!
These companies know what they do well and how to promote it. These companies make good use of their website and social media accounts, and if you Google these companies, you'll probably find multiple articles about them. Needless to say, they're not making these mistakes.
Job seekers are a very intelligent bunch, and many do a significant amount of research before applying to a company. More than ever, companies need effective employer branding to properly tell their story and showcase what they do well.
