Recently, an alarming article came out on Bloomberg, which addressed the increasing amount of ‘underemployed’ college graduates. They quoted a study that showed 44% of Americans ages 22 to 27 with a bachelor’s degree now work a job that doesn’t require their level of education. Watch: Fighting Against Underemployment Worse, that number has increased by 10% since 2001... and with more bright-eyed graduates entering the workforce all the time, it’s a fair assumption that competition will only continue to increase... That means that new graduates, who bought into the promise that their degree would grant them access to the inner circle of success, opportunity, and wealth, need to do something else to stand out and avoid the low-wage and part-time positions they’re being forced into.

So, How Do You Avoid Becoming An ‘Underemployed’ Graduate?

Fortunately for you, there are three highly effective ways to get your dream job after college. Here are three ways you can avoid a minimum wage job after college:

1. Career Education

Get educated. You know that the traditional resume and cover letter you were taught to create in college doesn’t really work - in fact, that’s part of the reason so many people are underemployed. Only 1% of resumes actually lead to a job offer… so it’s time to do something different. There are far better ways to get noticed and get your dream job, and plenty of qualified people out there showing you how. So, find a job seeking or career advancement program that makes sense to you, and make the leap.

2. Be Yourself

With everyone using the same, boring, job seeking techniques, you have an opportunity to really stand out. And all you have to do is be yourself. See, employers are dying to see you express your authentic skills and passions in a unique way - so do yourself and them a favor, and try it out. Add some color to your resume, create a cool portfolio, or make a hilarious website and video like this guy did. Putting the time into doing something creative like this could mean a higher salary, better job, and more opportunities… so try it out.

3. Become A Sniper

Most people take a “shotgun” approach to job seeking, where they fire off resumes to as many companies as possible and hope something hits… and that’s why they fail. However, if you think of yourself more like a sniper, and zero in on exactly what you want to do for 1 particular organization, then you’ve essentially defined your ‘dream job,' and can tailor your application to give yourself the greatest chance of success.
