Ever heard of adaptogens? They could be the secret to helping you manage your stress at work.

What Are Adaptogens?

Adaptogens are a class of herbs and plants found in nature which have been used for centuries in Eastern medicine. Adaptogenic herbs are primarily used to bring the body's functions into a state of homeostasis.

In dealing with stress, adaptogens can be really helpful no matter if the stress is caused by something mental, physical, chemical, or environmental.

Our bodies are exposed to so many different stressors throughout the day, that sometimes the body can't handle them on its own. These adaptogens really help the body function properly when dealing with stress, so your body can function at its highest capacity, instead of feeling drained.

How Can Adaptogens Be Beneficial In The Workplace?

Adaptogens help improve your sleep. When you get more sleep, your energy levels stay high throughout the day, and your productivity increases. Adaptogenic herbs can also help with overall brain function and can strengthen your immune system, meaning less sick days!

Reminder: It is recommended that you consult with your physician prior to trying adaptogens or other kinds of supplements, in case any pharmaceutical drugs you are on may have an interaction with the adaptogens.

My favorite adaptogenic herbs include ashwagandha, tulsi/holy basil, reishi mushroom, and maca powder. If I had to choose one as the "king" of all the adaptogens, I would say ashwagandha. Some people may say something else, but overall ashwagandha is really beneficial in reducing stress and helping the body meet that equilibrium.

There are many different ways to consume adaptogenic herbs in your diet. They can be found in teas, coffees, drink mixes, or you can get them in supplement form or in pure powder form and mix them into smoothies and oatmeal. If you are thinking about trying adaptogens, make sure they are organic, pure, and that their processing is clean.

Managing stress is important for professionals of all ages. Adaptogenic herbs are definitely beneficial in helping to reduce stress and bring your body to homeostasis, which will have a positive effect on your productivity in the workplace.
