Remote work opportunities were on the rise before the COVID-19 pandemic, and now these opportunities are more widely offered.
Work-from-home opportunities are here to stay and it's likely more job seekers will be seeking these opportunities out.
While it's good to have options, there will be a lot of competition for remote work positions. Here are three tips to make yourself a stand-out candidate for a remote work position.
Get Familiar With Remote Activities
Not everyone has the benefit of having work-from-home experience, and while that may not matter in some cases, it's still a good idea to have experience doing things remotely.
Virtual networking events are on the increase, you should see what type of virtual networks are available and take part in them. This will give you experience participating in virtual events and boost your networking skills.
If you have a few skills that you would like to learn or advance, take part in some online courses. It's also a good idea to brush up on your video interviewing skills, since video interviews are going to play a large part in the future of job interviews.
All of these virtual activities are just a way of getting used to doing things remotely, and show potential employers that you're flexible and comfortable doing so.
Quantify Your Remote Work Accomplishments
Whenever you're writing a resume, it's important to quantify your work accomplishments. It's the same with remote work experience! If you've had past remote work experience, it's not enough to just say that. You should also try to quantify what that means.
Did your work production increase from home?
Did you take on additional work responsibilities while working at home?
Use any concrete examples that you can to show that you're a productive remote worker. Ultimately, businesses want to be efficient and profitable and they want to make sure that you'll be a productive employee at home.
Show Some Initiative
Perhaps you organized a remote work club or company game night, or you played an essential role in organizing video meetings and making them efficient. This shows great initiative, and that even though you'll be working remotely, you'll still be an engaged member of the workforce.
In addition, like with any position that you apply to, it's important to research the company you're applying to, particularly their remote work policies. This will help during the interview process when you make a case for not only how you'll fit into the company's remote workforce, but how you can add to it.
